In the broader world of art, there are certain movements that are helplessly “of a period”. For example, someone with a verbose hairstyle wearing clothes that emphasize neon colors and black-and-white checkered patterns will more often than not be thought of as partaking in a revival of ‘80s fashion. This iconic teal and purple design has been gracing the sides of paper cups since the 1990s, as designer Khoi Vinh explains on his blog Subtraction.com. If I made an attempt to make an objective claim about this, I would surely fail. Yet I still feel it would be useful to say a little something about why I think this is the case. The Jazz design was created in 1991 by an artist in the Springfield, Missouri Art Department at Sweetheart. Sweetheart had an internal contest to come up with a new stock design and Gina’s Jazz Design was selected. Full blown production across multiple products did not start until early 1992. To this day, Ekiss keeps a few Jazz-adorned objects around and still sees them when she’s out and about.

Carmen began another chapter in her illustrious career as a solo artist with her critically acclaimed debut album “Finally Yours” (Evidence Records) in 1992. Born in Austin, Texas and raised in Altadena, California, Carmen Bradford grew up with music in her home and in her heart. It was only natural that Carmen would follow in the footsteps of her great family legacy, being the daughter of legendary trumpeter/ composer Bobby Bradford and world renowned vocalist/composer Melba Joyce. Her grandfather Melvin Moore sang with Lucky Millender and Dizzy Gillespie’s Big Band in the 1940’s, and sang with the Ink Spots, making Carmen the third generation of incredible musicians.

Gina Ekiss began working at Sweetheart’s art department in 1987 along with a few dozen other artists. As Ekiss recalls, the company wasn’t thrilled with initial external submissions for a new pattern design, so they turned to their own in-house creatives. Today, the very 1990s-style teal-and-purple Jazz design can be found on t-shirts, sandals, bumper stickers and other fan-made merchandise. Originally,  though, it was applied by the Sweetheart Cup Company to a series of plates, bowls and cups. Sweetheart has since been acquired by Solo, which in turn was acquired by the Dart Container Corporation, adding layers of complexity to the search for the pattern’s origins.

She has carved out a place in music history for herself and is playing an integral role in this uniquely American art form called jazz. Since 1960, the Fender Jazz bass (originally called Deluxe) has featured a tapered neck, contoured offset body, and twin single coil pickups.
